EDM Sauce's Phosphor Podcast, Ep. 1 by Edmsauce on Mixcloud
Welcome to Episode 1 of the new podcast from EDM Sauce, Phosphor, where it is our goal to bring you interesting, unique, and different sounds from around the world of electronic music. With a growing copycat culture within the EDM scene, we at EDM Sauce thought it would be a good idea to focus on those producing sounds that may not be on the Beatport Top 10 but certainly should be recognized for their creativity and effort. Every month we will bring you new tracks with links to the artist and a brief introduction to the artist/song. Finally, in an effort to make this a truly collaborative experience, we want to know what tracks/artists you think would fit our new idea. Send your suggestions to phosphorEDMsauce@gmail.com and we’ll shout you out in the podcast. Let’s get the word out about these deserving artists!
Episode 1 Tracklist and Artist Info:
A Tribe Called Red – Look At This
Homepage, Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud
Hailing from the land of Canada, this trio of Native-Canadian producers started making music “to throw parties” but has since evolved into a much more cerebral, pseudo-vox populi for the Native populations of Canada. They label their music “powwow-step,” which combines aspects of moombahton, electro house and dubstep over a foundation of music from the indigenous cultures they hail from.
R-Ash – You Are My High
Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud
Whether or not it’s justified, the land of New Jersey has been branded by certain, unsavory, things… mainly douchebags on MTV and a governor who closes bridges. Leave it to the French producer, R-Ash, to cut up classic R&B samples and paste them into high tempo grooves to bring about a re-branding of the Garden State in the form of Jersey Club music. The airy melodies flow smoothly as they lead into choppy choruses that never deviate from the soul infused vibe in every track.
Dom$olo – Hafemtea
Homepage, Facebook, Soundcloud
To get a clear idea of what exactly dom$olo produces, it’s probably best to describe his activity both in and out of the music realm. He created an interactive video game/mixtape called “1,000 Blunts.” He re-scored the sex scene from “Team America: World Police.” He uploads tracks to Mediafire for free downloads “cuz some1 asked.” As you can see, his personality is rangy and so is his music. Coming from the middle ground between hip hop and electronic music, dom$olo marries the blue note filled hip hop styles of Madlib with the subdued grandiosity of experimental artists like Flying Lotus.
Snails – Shawty
Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud
Continuing on our theme of Canadian producers, we bring aboot Snails. With probably the most plays of any artist this episode, Snails is steadily becoming a household name in the trap scene, or as he calls his music, “vomit-step.” With recent support from acts like ETC! ETC! and Botnek, Snails has helped shape the low tempo rumbles and 808 snares that define trap. In “Shawty,” the expected heavy drop is substituted by a musical rendering of the click-language the aliens speak in “Signs;” expect to be brought down a familiar path only to find yourself in a completely unfamiliar destination.
Cashmere Cat – Rice Rain (CloZee Remix)
Homepage, Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud
Casting the traditional gambits of glitch hop aside, the quietly productive CloZee is our second French producer of the episode. Often treating tempo as only a guideline, the eclectically instrumented musical scaffolding that she creates is fun and poppy but does not lose any profundity in doing so by treating sound and empty space equally, invoking the spirit of Miles Davis. Equal parts introspective and braggadocious, be sure to give your full attention to capture the full structure.
